MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball concluded its regular season home schedule in style in Thursday evening action against Bemidji State. The Dragons put together a strong defensive effort in a 79-43 rout of the Beavers.
How It Happened
- Moorhead was out of sorts to open the contest as Bemidji State would claim a 9-2 lead four minutes into the contest.
- The Dragons would settle down from there, evening the count at nine points after a basket from Caylin Kelly.
- An Ashton Safranski three-pointer late in the first quarter gave MSUM its first lead, 16-15.
- Bemidji State would regain a one-point lead heading into the second frame.
- The Beavers would continue to hold a lead (23-19) three minutes into the second period, forcing a timeout from Karla Nelson.
- MSUM would come alive on both ends of the floor out of the break, regaining a one-point lead after a steal and score from Safranski.
- The Dragons would conclude the quarter on a monster 17-0 run to earn a 34-23 lead at the break.
- It was the Moorhead defense that set the tone in the run, led by Safranski, who scored six points with six steals in the first half alone.
- As the second half began, MSUM's defense would not relent, holding Bemidji State without a point for nearly five minutes of the third quarter.
- Combined with the second quarter, the Dragons scored 26 unanswered points before the Beavers broke the dryspell.
- Moorhead held the Beavers without a field goal make for nearly 15 minutes of game action across the second and third quarters.
- After 30 minutes, MSUM led 58-33 with Kelly leading the Dragons with 12 points.
- The Dragon lead would balloon to 38 points late in the fourth quarter as Bemidji State would not be able to handle MSUM's suffocating defense.
- Safranski turned in another box score stuffer, scoring 13 points with a miraculous nine steals, six assists and four rebounds.
- Kelly finished the game with 12 points while Abby Berge netted 11 points with seven rebounds.
