MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team got off to a promising start with an opening set win, but Augustana rallied back to win the next three in a 14-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-15 win over the Dragons Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
MSUM fell to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the loss while Augustana, which is receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll, improved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Sophomore hitter
Amanda Carlson had nine kills and eight digs for MSUM while sophomore hitter
Sarah Petrbok had six kills and 14 digs. Sophomore hitter Layla Sanati-Zaker had six kills.
Freshman
Amber Bretwisch had 15 set assists while sophomore
Becca Koehn had 13. Senior middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins had five block assists and a solo block. Senior libero
Taylor Thorson and Bretwisch added eight digs each.
MSUM hit .333 for the first set but couldn't sustain that pace for the rest of the match. Augustana hit .304 for the match overall compared to .114 for the Dragons.
The Dragons stormed out quickly, leading the entire way in Set 1, thanks to 12 kills and only two hitting errors.
The second set was close as well as the Dragons were down 21-18 but the Vikings scored the final four points of the set to take a 25-18 win. After that, the Viking offense was effective in the final two sets, hitting .500 in Set 3 and .370 in Set 4 to take 25-14 and 25-15 wins, respectively.
Freshman hitter
Teeya Doppler had three block assists and three kills for MSUM, which heads on the road next week for a pair of matches, starting Friday at Sioux Falls.
