MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team was swept by No. 20-ranked Wayne State, 25-16, 25-14, 25-9 in the Dragons' home opener on Friday at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
MSUM fell to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Wayne State is now 9-0 overall and 1-0 in league.
Sophomore hitter
Sarah Petrbok led MSUM with seven kills. Sophomore Layla Sanati-Zaker and senior middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins had six each. Sophomore setter
Becca Koehn had 13 assists while freshman setter
Amber Bretwisch had 12. Three players had eight digs for MSUM: Koehn, senior libero
Taylor Thorson and Petrbok. Sanati-Zaker, Jenkins and freshman hitter
Teeya Doppler had two block assists each.
MSUM kept pace in the first set and was down 14-11 after a Jenkins kill, but WSC scored the next three points to extend the lead to 17-11. The Dragons got no closer than four the rest of the set and fell 25-16.
Wayne State opened the second set on an 11-3 run went on to take a 25-13 win. The third set saw the Wildcats get off to a 15-3 lead and taking a 25-9 win.
Wayne State hit .380 for the match compared to .143 for MSUM.
Freshman hitter
Bridget Witzmann had four kills for MSUM.
The Dragons host Augustana on Saturday at 2 p.m.
