Dragon Women Continue Success in Nelson Era

MOORHEAD, Minn. — A second straight regular-season conference title and a second straight trip to the NCAA tournament highlighted the 2017-18 year for the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team.
The Dragons finished with a 23-6 mark, their third straight season of 20 wins or more. They have had 18 straight winning seasons in the Karla Nelson coaching era.

MSUM tied a school record with 16 straight wins in 2017-18. MSUM finished 19-3 in the league to pick up a second straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference crown.

All-NSIC Honors
Three Dragons received postseason honors from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Senior forward Drew Sannes and junior guard Jacky Volkert were each named to the All-NSIC First Team, while senior guard Cassidy Thorson was named to the All-NSIC Second Team for a second straight year.

Record Books
The Dragons left their marks on the record books as well.
--Sannes leaves MSUM as the all-time record holder in blocked shots (227). She also leaves in the top 10 in rebounding (813, sixth) and points scored (1,288, ninth).
--Thorson leaves MSUM as the school's all-time leader in three-pointers made (225); she is the only Dragon women's player to surpass 200 threes. Thorson also is 20th all-time with 1,043 points.
--Volkert set the new MSUM single-season record with 156 assists. She is fifth all-time at MSUM with 353 assists.

Sannes Earns Honors
Sannes was named as a CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team selection earlier this month, becoming the first Dragon women's basketball player to earn first-team honors. Sannes also earned all-region honors from the D2CCA.
