Dragon Softball to Play Four Doubleheaders in Six Days This Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team has a busy week ahead with four doubleheaders in six days. The Dragons will host Minot State at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and then host Northern State at 2 p.m. on Thursday. They will go on the road this weekend to face Winona State at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Upper Iowa on Sunday at noon.

MSUM is 10-22 overall and 3-13 in the NSIC.  This week's games are part of a stretch of six doubleheaders in nine days for the Dragons.

The Dragons went 2-4 last week, splitting with Mary and Concordia-St. Paul while being swept by Minnesota State.

Leading the Dragon offense is senior left fielder Kristy Bruni, who is hitting .313 with seven doubles, three homers and 18 RBI. Senior pitcher/second baseman Kristen Nordby is hitting .300 with three homers and 10 RBI. Junior first baseman Lauren Meeker and junior third baseman Kristina Villalobos each have two homers. Meeker and freshman shortstop Taylor Roddie each have six doubles, while junior center fielder Carly Williamson has five steals and a team-best two triples. As a team the Dragons are hitting .229 with 10 homers and 71 RBI.

On the mound, senior Morgan Nybo is 4-12 with a team-best 3.55 ERA. She has 69 strikeouts in 92.2 innings. Nordby is 5-9 with a 4.72 ERA. Nybo and Nordby each have one shutout on the season. As team MSUM has an ERA of 4.57.

Kelsey Fehl is in her sixth season as MSUM's head coach.

About Minot State
Minot State is 12-21 overall and 1-14 in the NSIC. The Beavers have lost nine game in a row, including three games this weekend to Winona State (two) and Upper Iowa. Sophomore Ashley Hill leads Minot with a .380 batting average with five homers and 20 RBI.  Junior Jordan Grant is hitting .348 while junior Rachel Burdette is hitting .333 with five homers and 22 RBI. As a team Minot is hitting .282 with 21 homers and 123 RBI. Junior Alyssa Cornejo is 6-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 64.2 innings. Minot has a team ERA of 4.68. Bill Triplett is in his ninth season as Minot's head coach with a record of 268-141.

About Northern State
The Wolves, who will face Mary prior to facing MSUM, enter the week with a six-game winning streak. They are 18-22 overall and 8-8 in the NSIC. The Wolves are led by Kelsey Gale at the plate; she is hitting .371 with three homers and 13 RBI. Macey Engel has six homers and 29 RBI to lead the team in both areas. As a team the Wolves are hitting .255 with 17 homers and 133 RBI in 40 games. On the mound Missy Elkins is 10-10 with a 3.12 ERA in 125.2 innings. Jamie Fisher leads with 67 strikeouts. Kristi Villar is in her sixth season as Northern State's head coach with a record of 124-152 at the school.

About Upper Iowa
The Peacocks are 26-12 overall and 12-4 in the conference. They enter the week on a three-game winning streak. Jacqueline Flood leads Upper Iowa with a .365 average to go with seven homers and 28 RBI. Sammy Garrett is hitting .333 with two homers and 12 RBI. As a team Upper Iowa is hitting .285 with 29 homers and 168 RBI in 38 games. On the mound, Flood is 11-7 with a 1.77 ERA in 118.1 innings while Brooke Redmond is 14-4 with a 2.06 ERA in 125.2 innings. Amanda Bradberry is in her third season as Upper Iowa's head coach with a record of 70-70 at the school.

About Winona State
The Warriors are 27-11 overall and 9-6 in the NSIC. They went 3-1 on a weekend road trip to North Dakota, sweeping Minot State while splitting with Mary. Reed Karsten is hitting .432 with 12 doubles, nine homers and 35 RBI to lead the Warrior offense. Natalie Kalmes is hitting .388 with five homers and 32 RBI. As a team Winona State is hitting .313 with 31 homers and 218 RBI in 38 games. On the mound Hanna Lythberg has been stellar, going 15-5 with a 1.50 ERA in 121.2 innings. Greg Jones is in his 15th season as Winona State's head coach with a record.
