NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Junior
Jenna Thompson's win in the 50 freestyle highlighted a strong showing by the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's swimming and diving team at the Cows, Colleges and Contentment Classic hosted by St. Olaf College Saturday in Northfield, Minn.
No team scores were kept at the meet, which featured six teams, including NSIC foes St. Cloud State and Minnesota State, Mankato. The Dragons' goal, however, was to place as many athletes in the top 16 (which is the amount usually scored) as possible.
Thompson capped off an excellent weekend with a win in the 50 freestyle, despite not swimming in the highest-seeded heat. She was seeded ninth coming into the race but prevailed with an impressive time of 24.72. Thompson also was seeded 11th in the 100 free but had a good race in taking third at 54.79.
The MSUM's 200 freestyle relay was second with a time of 1:39.80 in a thrilling race that went down to the wire between the Dragons, St. Cloud and Mankato.
Thompson put the Dragons in the lead and sophomore
Rachel Walsh maintained the lead by 0.11 over Mankato. Sophomore
Susie Kitzman surrendered the lead to St. Cloud on her first length but battled back to reclaim it as the three schools were separated by just 0.08 just before she hit the wall. Junior
Megan Rieland lost the lead in the last few yards as St. Cloud finished first with 1:39.22, just ahead of MSUM. That was a three-second drop for Moorhead that event while both Mankato and St Cloud were a half second off their season-bests.
Freshman
Jackie Woods was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.45) and seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.22). The Dragons' 200 medley relay was fifth at 1:52.66. That consisted of freshman
Rachel Erickson, Woods, Rieland and Thompson.
In diving, junior
Kelsey Jandro was fourth in the 3-meter diving, while junior
Shayna Dugger was sixth. Dugger was fifth in the one-meter diving and while Jandro was seventh.
Junior
Angelee Hale had an excellent all-around day for the Dragons with dramatic improvements in her events. She was seeded ninth in the 500 free but finished third with a time of 5:26.04. She was seeded 19th in the 200 free but placed sixth at 2:01.18, and was seeded 31st in the 100 free but placed 12th.
Walsh was another Dragon to shine on the day. She took fourth in the 100 free at 54.97 after being seeded seventh. Walsh was seeded 20th in the 200 freestyle and placed seventh at 2:01.58.
Freshman
Annika Bordak also was sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.58), improving her seed by three spots, and was 12th in the 200 backstroke (2:18.11) after being seeded 19th. She had a personal-best time of 5:06.53 in the 400 IM. Kitzman was sixth in the 100 freestyle (55.18) after entering seeded sixth.
Senior captain
Olivia de Gruchy dropped an impressive 25 seconds off of her 500 free time, taking eighth at 5:34.49. Sophomore
Marisa Yasuda also had a good day, placing 10th in the 100 fly after being seeded 15th, and placing 16th in the 200 backstroke after being seeded 15th.
MSUM returns home to play host to the College of St. Benedict on Nov. 10 for a dual meet, which is set to begin at 11 a.m.
