Gusewelle Leads Dragons into NCAA DII National Championships

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. - Senior Ann Gusewelle will complete her tenure at Minnesota State University Moorhead this upcoming week as she will compete at the NCAA Division II National Swimming & Diving Championships March 10-13, trying to add to her three All-American honors. She is one of three Dragons that qualified for the National Championships that are held in Canton, Ohio.

Gusewelle, arguably the best swimmer in MSUM history, will compete in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes. In 2009, she earned her third All-American honor and second one in the 100-yard breaststroke as she finished sixth. In 2008, she finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and sixth in the 200-yard medley relay to nab All-American honors in both of those events as well. She competed at the NCAA DII Championships as a freshman in 2007, where she placed 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

She ranks fifth going into the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke after turning in her season top time of 1:04.64. Gusewelle ranks 32nd in the 200-yard coming in with a time of 2:25.19 this season. She will swim on Friday (100-yard) and Saturday (200-yard) in the preliminary events that begin at 10:30 a.m. both days. The finals will begin at 5 p.m. the evening of same day the preliminary was raced.

Both Dragon divers, Kayla Koenig and Heather Johnson will compete in the NCAA DII Diving pre-qualifier on Tuesday night to try to earn one of 16 slots that will compete in the Championships. Koenig and Johnson are two of 27 divers that will compete on the 3-meter diving board and two of 28 that will try at the 1-meter height. If they will move on to the top-16, they will begin competition on Thursday.
