Dragons End Rebel Spring Games With Strong Game Against No.5 Warriors

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons softball team ended their week at the Rebel Spring Games with a strong game against the No. 5 ranked Wayne State Warriors (Mich.), suffering a 3-1 loss. They lost game one on Friday 9-1.

The Dragons freshman pitcher, Alexa D'Onofrio allowed just three runs to the top ranked team, while the Warriors were able to tally 12 hits. She had no walks in the contest and was backed by strong Dragons defense.

The Warriors went up 1-0 in the first inning as they led off the bottom of the inning with a single and ad advance on a sacrifice bunt. Allison Allen scored on a single by Brittany Omelanchuck. They tagged another run tot their lead in the third as Allen scored her second run of the game.

The Dragons broke up Casey Hanes no-hitter in the top of the fourth inning as Ariel Adelson hit the team's first home run of the season over the left field fence.

Wayne State tallied an insurance run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Stephanie LeClair.

In the top of the seventh inning, Amanda Hoefer led the Dragon off with a single into centerfield. Casey Preston was hit by a pitch in the following at bat to put two on with no outs. Jessica Hollis laid down a perfect bunt for the first out to advance both runners into scoring position. The momentum would not turn into runs for the Dragons as the Warriors tough pitching ended the game.

In the first game, the Dragons were plagued by an error in the fourth inning to suffer the loss. Six of Shepherd's runs were unearned as the team took the run-rule lead in the fourth.

MSUM heads home with a 2-10 overall record and will open play on March 25 in Bismarck, N.D. against the University of Mary in a non-conference game.
