ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minnesota State Moorhead soccer would see an incredible goal from
Mary Cox in NSIC action Sunday afternoon. However, Cox's goal would not be enough for the Dragons, who fell to Northern State, 3-1.
The squads would play an even 10 minutes before the Wolves made the game's first statement. Northern State would attempt the match's first shot, scoring a goal in the process ahead of the 14
th minute.
Mary Cox would have MSUM's first offensive opportunity in the 20
th minute, but the shot would not land on net.
Clara Butler would fire off a shot three minutes later that missed right.
Emilia Bukholt Kristensen would be tested again with less than 15 minutes to play in the half. Kristensen would make a trio of stops to keep the Dragon deficit at one goal. The sophomore goalkeeper would make a total of four saves in the half. Northern State would carry the 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room. The teams would remain quiet on offense into the second half with only one combined shot on goal through 10 minutes.
Ellie Lommel would have a shot miss ahead of the 68
th minute as MSUM earned a corner kick in the 69
th minute. On the corner,
Sophie Thompson would deliver a ball that bounced once before being poked by the foot of
Kaci Malo. The ball would take a Dragon bounce, landing in front of Cox, who squared up for an attempt. Cox's mark found the top left corner of the net, equalizing the match at 69:24. Both Thompson and Malo gathered assists on the spectacular Dragon goal.
The contest would remain tied for the over 10 minutes before the Wolves struck again. Northern State scored on a rebound to regain the advantage in the 82
nd minute. The Wolves would convert another goal ahead of the 87
th minute to secure a 3-1 lead. That score would hold through 90 minutes.
