SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Minnesota State Moorhead women's basketball battled hard, but ultimately fell in an NSIC Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday. The 10
th-seeded Dragons fell to second-seeded Concordia-St. Paul, 70-66.
Moorhead would weather an early CSP storm with the Golden Bears claiming a 6-2 lead to open the game. MSUM's defense would clamp down from there, working their way back on the scoreboard thanks to two baskets from
Terryn Johnson. Late in the first frame, MSUM would tie the score at 11 points after three quick points from
Abby Berge. After 10 minutes of action, the teams sat tied at 11 points.
Johnson and Berge would continue to pace the Dragon offense into the second period. By the halftime break, Moorhead would hold a 33-30 advantage after closing the half on an 8-0 run. Berge led MSUM with nine points and eight rebounds while Johnson added eight points. Moorhead earned the paint advantage, scoring 20 inside points to CSP's four. The Dragons also shot 40 percent from the floor compared to Concordia-St. Paul's 37.9 percent clip.
Defense would continue to pace both squads to begin the second half with the Golden Bears holding a narrow, 37-35 lead. Moorhead would quickly respond with baskets from
Ashton Safranski and
Emily Srejma to regain a 41-37 advantage midway through the third quarter. Throughout the remainder of the quarter, the teams would trade the lead before ending the period in a 49-49 tie. Berge and
Aubrey Morrison each had 11 points for Moorhead with Johnson adding 10.
The Golden Bears would gain a small edge in the momentum department to open the final stanza, securing a four-point lead (57-53). By the midway point of the final frame, CSP led 63-58. With under three minutes to play, the Golden Bears held a 66-60 lead with the Dragons attempting to claw back late.
MSUM would come as close as two points down the stretch, but Concordia-St. Paul would hang on thanks to late foul shots. The Golden Bears defeated the Dragons 70-66 with Moorhead's veterans leading the way. Both Berge and Johnson appropriately secured double-doubles in their final games as Dragons. Johnson scored a team-high 19 points with 10 rebounds while Berge scored 17 points while snaring 11 rebounds. The senior Johnson secured her 800
th career rebound in the loss.
