| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead tennis will begin the spring campaign this weekend in a non-conference dual with Minnesota Crookston. The Dragons and Golden Eagles will battle in Grand Forks, N.D., beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Preseason Buzz...Moorhead claimed 36 points in the annual NSIC preseson coaches' poll that was topped by reigning champion Augustana with 100 points and 10 first-place votes. Sioux Falls, who earned the third spot in the rankings, claimed the other first-place nod. Senior Luzmary Diaz Castillo was named the league's Preseason Player of the Year. Diaz Castillo is coming off a record-setting season in 2024-25, securing All-NSIC First Team Singles and Doubles honors. The Maracay, Venezuela, product tallied 15 victories in singles action a season ago while also securing a school record 16 doubles wins alongside partner (and now assistant coach) Shaelyn Johnson. Diaz Castillo went 5-2 in NSIC singles play last season while also earning five doubles wins in league play.

A Fall Recap...Moorhead competed in four events during the fall, which included duals against Concordia College and the University of Mary. Diaz Castillo and Sophia Felderman led the Dragons with 5-3 singles records. Felderman and doubles partner Katryna Hansen collected four wins during the fall season. Hansen also earned four singles wins for the Dragons.

Coaches' Comments...Head coach Damien O'Donnell had this to say as the Dragons begin spring action: "As I undergo my first season as head coach, I am excited to see the drive and the hunger of this team. We have great internal competition, and we know as a team that is what will make us stronger. Pairing that with the versatility and chemistry of this roster, it should be a great season."

Newcomers Are Here...The Dragons added four true freshmen to this year's roster as well as a pair of transfers. During the fall season, freshmen Autumn Kron, Lydia Sparby and Sammie Wood would all notch collegiate wins. Sophomore transfer Camilla Bonini looks to be an impact player for the Dragons, securing four singles wins during the fall. Bonini and double partner Diaz Castillo also collected four wins in the fall. Sophomore transfer Emma Farder scored three singles victories during the fall campaign.

A Look At The Schedule...Saturday's meeting with the Golden Eagles will be one of four non-conference bouts for the Dragons this spring. Moorhead will travel to Orlando, Fla. in mid-March for non-conference duals with Northwood (3/9), St. Thomas Aquinas (3/11) and East Stroudsburg (3/12). The remainder of MSUM's schedule will be NSIC matchups beginning with Winona State (2/14) and Minnesota State (2/15). Moorhead will host one home weekend this season, welcoming Augustana (3/27) and Sioux Falls (3/28). The NSIC Tennis Tournament is scheduled to begin Friday, April 24 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Damien O'Donnell is in his first season as MSUM's head women's tennis coach.
