BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Following a career performance against tenth-ranked Minnesota State on Sunday, MSUM senior goalkeeper
Simone Lewald has been named the NSIC's Goalkeeper of the Week.
Lewald made eight saves in the Dragon's upset victory over the Mavericks on Sunday, including a late punch out that solidified the win for MSUM. It is the first time the Dragons have bested Minnesota State since October 14, 1997. In the win, Lewald faced 26 total shots from the Mavericks and would only surrender one goal on a penalty kick. Lewald saw six Maverick corner kicks and would stifle each attempt at the net.
The Leander, Texas, native is having a career year for the Dragons as she is second in the NSIC in total saves (89) and save percentage (.864). Her career marks are also inching up the MSUM all-time leaderboard as she sits just outside the top ten in school history with 157 career saves. Her 1.52 goals against average is currently the third-best mark in program history with her .818 career save percentage being the seventh-best in MSUM history. Lewald has played 2,067 minutes in her career for MSUM, which ranks sixth among goalkeepers in school history.
The Dragons are back on the pitch Friday for a road match with Augustana, which begins at 4 p.m.
