MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team is on a 10-game winning streak entering Friday's home game with Bemidji State. In recent years, a long regular-season winning streak isn't new to the Dragons, who are seeking a three-peat as NSIC regular season champions under the direction of Head Coach
Karla Nelson.
MSUM (12-2, 8-0 NSIC) has a winning streak of at least 10 games for the third straight year -- Bentley is the only other Division II program to have attained that at this point.
During the current winning streak MSUM is scoring 67.9 points per game and allowing only 52.9. They are outrebounding their foes 41.0-30.3 and have a dominating 150-75 edge in offensive rebounds. The Dragons are averaging 10.2 turnovers per game. Sophomore
Kiley Borowicz is averaging 15.6 points per game during that run while
Jacky Volkert is averaging 13.3 points and 4.7 assists per game.
Megan Hintz also is averaging a double-double during that run.
The 2017-18 season saw MSUM put together a 16-game winning streak which is tied for the longest in school history. It started with a 64-61 overtime home win over Northern State on Dec. 19, 2017 and included three wins in overtime, including a four-overtime triumph at Winona State. The streak included an unbeaten month of January (8-0). The 16th win in the streak — a triumph over St. Cloud State on Feb. 16, 2018 — clinched a second straight NSIC regular-season title and third straight NSIC North crown.
The streak was ended by Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 17 by a 59-47 score.
During that streak, four players averaged in double figures —
Jacky Volkert (15.6),
Drew Sannes (14.8),
Megan Hintz (12.7) and
Cassidy Thorson (10.4).
In 2016-17, a 15-game winning streak started with 73-44 win over Quincy on Nov. 18, 2016. Twelve of the 15 wins came against NSIC foes to help MSUM take control in the NSIC race. During that streak, MSUM allowed 53.8 points per game and scored 71.1. Three Dragons averaged in double figures:
Drew Sannes (15.5),
Cassidy Thorson (13.9) and
Jacky Volkert (11.7).
That streak ended with a 71-59 home loss to Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 20. MSUM won the NSIC regular season title and also qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2016-17.
Four members of the current Dragon roster have been part of all three winning streaks: Volkert, Hintz, Made Green and
Grace Swenson.
